post rain skies
Please accept my humble apologies for being so silent so long! Summer - fun can get you side tracked!

Here is your pep talk for the week.
In the caribbean summer months also mean summer rains. How does your hair styling techniques adapt to the weather?  Frizzy hair is the main enemy in the summer, the first line of defense is ensuring your hair is adequately moisturized. Is your scalp itchy, but not necessarily flaky - It's Time to
moisturise! Does your hair frizz easily - even without the rain? - It's time to moisturize. Does your hair sound crunchy and feel crunchy? - It's time to moisturizes.
Each hair strand/shaft has 3 components - the medulla, the cortex and the cuticle. Think of a wooden pencil cut in half: the medulla would be the lead/graphite, the cortex would be the wood around the lead, and the cuticle would be the outer colour of the pencil. The moisture retaining element of the hair is the cortex. The cuticle protects the cortex. When the hair is dry the cuticle lifts, causing hair to appear frizzy and exposes the cortex. When we shampoo and condition our hair the water moves into the cortex and moisturizes the strands. The next and most important step is to seal in this moisture. Due to to the delicate nature of black hair we are more prone to dryness, thanks to our kinks and curls. That is why we must ensure to seal in the moisture with a conditioner, oil or creme. Sealing in moisture causes the culicle to lie down and give the hair a smooth appearance.
With the moisture locked in it is time to protective style! In rainy months protective styles work best because u will manipulate your hair less and you won't have to be too concerned if your hair gets wet. Just towel dry your scalp, oil hair and scalp and you will be good to go once again :-)

P.S. When the weather is nice and warm remove your protective style for an awesome braid-out, twist-out or even flat twist-out!

P.S.S. - See my other post - Clean Your Scalp, Don't Dry It Out for tips on how to LOC in the moisture
